How to Choose the Right Size Dumpster Rental

November 2, 2021

Dumpster rental is a service that provides people with the ability to get rid of their junk in an eco-friendly manner. This includes everything from yard debris to furniture and appliances. Dumpsters come in all shapes, sizes, and pricing options. The size of the dumpster you need for your project will depend on how much stuff you have to get rid of or what type of job site it is (construction, demolition). Here are some tips to help you choose the right size dumpster.

1. Know What Size Dumpster You Need to Rent

Dumpsters come in 10-, 20-, 30-, and 40-yard sizes. The smallest is a 10-yarder, and the largest is a 40-yarder that will hold between 12 and 20 pickup truck loads of debris depending on the type of junk you are removing (poured concrete, trees, drywall, etc). Renting the smallest dumpster will cost you less since there's less to transport; however, it won't be able to hold as much stuff. The largest option is best if you have a lot of heavy-duty materials like concrete or materials that can't be broken down. You'll also need to rent the largest dumpster if you don't have access to a truck to haul your junk away.

2. Know How Much Room You Need to Store Your Dumpster Rental

Dumpsters come in different sizes, but it's also important to know that the space where you plan on placing the dumpster will play a role in the size of dumpster you rent. For example, if you're planning on placing your dumpster on the side of your house by the driveway, you'll need to make sure you have enough room for the rental company to position the dumpster. You'll also want to make sure you account for space around and above the dumpster, so you don't accidentally block it in.

3. Don't Forget About the Weight

Another factor to consider when choosing a dumpster size is how heavy your junk is. The weight of your garbage will affect the type of truck you need to rent as well as the dumpster's size and capacity. A 10-yarder will only hold around two tons of waste, but a 40-yarder can hold around six tons. Make sure to check what the weight limit is for any dumpster you are renting.

According to ScienceDirect, about 30% of the materials brought to a typical construction site may be wasted. This is why it's important to hire a dumpster rental service to ensure your mess can be dealt with in an eco-friendly manner.
